This year we celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Trasimeno Music Festival. Those of you who have already visited us know the magic of Lake Trasimeno. Situated in the heart of Umbria, just twenty minutes from the historic city of Perugia, it is one of the most beautiful natural sights in Italy, and the country’s fourth largest lake. The festival venue is the Castle of the Knights of Malta in Magione, with its stunning 15th-century courtyard. The festival brings together musicians and music-lovers from all over the world for a week. For me the highlight is performing with artists of my own choosing, making music in an intimate and inspiring setting. For the audience, it is the opportunity to experience a different concert every night while at the same time becoming familiar with the beauties of Umbria. We offer the complete package to those who want not just the music, but guided tours to such places as Assisi, Perugia, Todi, and Gubbio. These include the Gala Dinners that precede several of the concerts.
The sixth festival will be held from June 26 to July 2, 2010. If you would like to receive details when available, please enter your e-mail address on the newsletter page.
In order to keep the standard we have set with previous festivals, we urgently need your support. To make a donation, please visit the donations page. We are grateful for any amount you can give, and look forward to welcoming you as a member of the Trasimeno family!

Frank Dituri is the son of Italian immigrants and lives between New York and Italy.
His passion for travelling is reflected in his work.
Dituri likes to transform the things of our daily lives, things we are familiar with, obvious things, and give them a surreal twist.
His photographs are on show in the US, Asia, Europe and, of course, Italy, where he is exhibited at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. He has published several books and catalogues, and his images have been picked up by such newspapers as the NY Times, the Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, Zoom and Leica Magazine. His work is also included in both private and public art collections.
For more than 30 year Dituri has also been busy teaching, holding seminars all over the world. He is currently a professor of art at the University of Long Island and participates in the LTA/Guggenheim Museum Program as artist/teacher.

In 1495 a small army of exiles from Siena and Perugia occupied the castle of Passignano, but Perugia’s reaction was so violent that the invaders hoisted boats on their shoulders and tried to save themselves by sailing in the direction of the islands, but in vain. From that event of long ago comes the present-day Palio delle Barche. It is highly spectacular, and unique of its kind. The race is articulated in three stages: the first and the third in water, the second on the land, the contestants with the boats on their shoulders crossing the narrow streets of the historic centre. The race, which takes place on the last Sunday of July, involves no less than 160 contestants divided into four neighbourhoods: Historic Centre, Centre 2, Oliveto and S. Donato. They take as symbol four lake fishes: Queen Carp, Pike, Eel and Perch. During the Palio there is also the “Corsa delle Brocche” that is restricted to women.
The programme includes:
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday: neighbourhoods individual trials
- Friday: “Corsa delle Brocche”
- Saturday: launching of the challenge
- Sunday: Historic Parade and Palio delle Barche
Taverns are open every evening.

Since 1984, from the end of April to the beginning of May, hundreds of kite enthusiasts from all over the world meet up at the shores of Lake Trasimeno for the “Coloriamo i Cieli” (Let’s colour the sky) events.
During the manifestation thousands of multi-coloured kites in the most diverse shapes and sizes are flown in the skies above Lake Trasimeno. In perfect synthesis, nature, countryside and cultural values of the area come together with playfulness, colours and fantasy.
“Coloriamo i Cieli” is organized to include the spectators, along with the kite-flyers, to become protagonists in an encounter of human races, society and culture based on liberty, respect for nature and friendship. In this sense “Coloriamo i Cieli”, more than any other event, incarnates the characteristic cultural values of the people of Lake Trasimeno.
The event is very much appreciated and deeply rooted here, reaching its peak on the free flight days, and lives all through the year through various activities. From February to May, in the primary and middle schools of a wide area of Umbria and Tuscany, workshops are set up to build kites with the participation of thousands of local children. Over the years the event has also provided time for reflection on themes such as environment, peace and human rights, encouraging exhibitions, meetings and discussions.
The happening combines fantasy, colour, good food and the typical products of Trasimeno area promoting environmental and cultural tourism, showing places and activities built for people in line with the protection of the environment.
Hot-air balloons, walking, riding and cycling routes added to kites, the leitmotiv of the event, and now they are a delightful way to discover the territory and its wonders.
A preview of Trasimeno Blues and the Environmental Film Festival are the newcomers.
They enlarge an already pleasant and amusing programme, worth trying.

The Terzieri date back to that period when the town of Citta della Pievewas separated into three distinct districts, for political reasons. In1250 the Terzieri submit their control to Perugia after a brief bout ofliberty under the Emperor Federico II of Swabia, and the castle ofCitta dela Pieve gets handed over to the City of the Grifon.During the 15th and 16th centuries, as the local scholars write, thetradition of bull hunting in the towns (like in Siena) comes to Cittadella Pieve. Whereas once the real Chianina bull was hunteddown in the streets by means of spears, today the Terzieri challengeeach other by hitting arrows towards mobile silhouettes in the shape ofbulls collocated on a circular footboard. When the original challenge waslaunched, it was the time of Pietro Vannucci, known in art as thePerugino (about 1450-1523), that saw the original version take hold. The costumes seen in the very colourful medieval procession (700 costumed locals parade down the streets) every year are based on his paintings. From the second half of August, many other Renaissance events (drama, music, dance) also take place. Inthis period the Terzieri's typical taverns are open and proposespecialties of the Umbrian and Tuscan traditional cooking.

Trasimeno Lake and the rolling hills that surround her are imbued with a joyous and evocative spirit when, in the last ten days of July and the first few days of August, the Trasimeno Blues Festival comes to town, one of the most important festivals of its genre in Italy. Its venues cover the map and Trasimeno Blues goes to most of the villages and towns that make up the Trasimeno area, from the old town centres to the characteristic parks. For twelve days twenty stages offer more than thirty concerts from dusk to dawn, almost all of them free. Alongside the music there are exhibitions, musical dinners and music labs. It is a musical journey into the green heart of Italy where over the years such important Italian and international musicians such as Johnny Winter, Jack Bruce & Robin Tower, Maceo Parker, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Sugar Blue, Brian Auger, Alex Britti, Ana Popovic, Cheryl Porter, Shemekia Copeland, Eugenio Finardi, Gegé Telesforo, Fairport Convention, The James Taylor Quartet, Carl Palmer, Them, Ten Years After, Charlie Musselwhite, Treves Blues Band and so many other. The warm notes of the Blues blend into the surrounding countryside and meld with the art, they make holidays spent at Trasimeno truly unforgettable, imbued with a spirit of joy, peace and harmony.
